when you think happiness

] Life was good. Better than good, really. Eddie had never been the type to think about his future, but that had change from the moment Chrissy Cunningham had walked into his life. They had built a life together, from surviving Vecna, to an easy summer of entertaining pre-teens at camp, to traveling back and forth across the country solving problems of the supernatural variety. For as different as it all was, there was some part that was always the same. It was always them, together, hand in hand, ready to take on whatever challenge came their way.

That might be why this was the worst two weeks of his life. Because it was the longest in the past several years that they had been apart for more than a day. They were bound to settle down eventually, he knew she wanted that, and part of him had wanted it too. He knew Chrissy had mentioned wanting to open a little shop to sell flowers, and Eddie thought he could do any sort of job, as long as it was somewhere near her. So when they had found a little storefront for sale somewhere out west, nestled on a busy main street of a tiny town that hosted tourists every summer, they had taken the plunge.

So, despite the fact that Eddie had wanted, practically begged, to stay with her-- he set out to tie all their loose ends while Chrissy got their new apartment in order and began setting up things in her Sunny Day flower shop. Mostly it involved him making a long haul back to Indiana for the last of their things, and letting their contacts know they were out of the monster hunting business for the foreseeable future.

The time away from her had been excruciating, despite their nightly phone calls. Some part of him just ached when they were apart, and on that last stretch of road towards what was now home, Eddie had no qualms pushing the speed limit.

He was supposed to meet her at their apartment that evening, but Eddie had purposefully fudged a few details about his last day of travel so that he would have time to prepare. He let himself into the flower shop, which was already decorated and filled with flowers that would be part of their grand opening. Eddie hustled back and forth between his van and the shop, moving like a man possessed. By the time he was finished, the sun was setting, and the shop was filled with the glow of countless candles, tucked carefully on every available surface.

Eddie swallowed down his nerves as he fumbled with the phone behind the counter, calling Chrissy at their apartment, where she was currently expecting him. ]

H-hey, hey baby girl. [ He felt like a teenager again, nervous and fumbling for words. ] Yeah, could you meet me at the shop? I brought a few things over, just wanna make sure everything looks good. Yeah... yeah, okay. See you soon. Love you.

[ And now he waits. ]
